Medardo Rosso at Kunstmuseum in Basilea

From March 29 to August 10, 2025, the Kunstmuseum Basel will host the exhibition Medardo Rosso. The Invention of Modern Sculpture, curated by Heike Eipeldauer and Elena Filipovic. This retrospective, coming twenty years after the first and only retrospective in Switzerland dedicated to Medardo Rosso (Turin, 1858 – Milan, 1928), offers a unique opportunity to rediscover the revolutionary work of the sculptor and photographer who challenged the artistic conventions of his time and profoundly influenced modern sculpture.
Featuring around 50 sculptures in bronze, plaster, and wax—including iconic pieces—as well as more than 250 photographs and drawings, the exhibition aims to shed new light on Rosso’s pioneering work carried out in Milan and Paris at the turn of the 20th century. It also invites reflection on the contemporary relevance of his art and lays the groundwork for a renewed understanding of the history of modern sculpture. Organized in collaboration with the mumok in Vienna, the exhibition highlights the artist’s experimental and transmedial approach to form, material, and technique. His works will be presented in dialogue with more than 60 photographs, paintings, sculptures, and videos—both historical and contemporary—by over 60 artists from the past hundred years, including Lynda Benglis, Constantin Brâncuși, Edgar Degas, David Hammons, Eva Hesse, Meret Oppenheim, Auguste Rodin, and Alina Szapocznikow.
